Imagine being an explorer with a map that changes overnight. The path you mapped yesterday might lead nowhere today. The shortcut you discovered last week could now be a dead end. To stay on track, you need to keep updating your map, learning new routes, and discovering better paths forward.
This is exactly what it’s like navigating change in today’s business world. The landscape is constantly evolving, especially with AI rapidly transforming how we work. Organizations worldwide are grappling with the profound implications of AI integration, from automated workflows to new business operating models. What was effective last year may not work today. To continue to thrive you need effective change management skills to support yourself, your teams and your organisation through ongoing disruption and upheaval.
At ChangeQuest we see this firsthand. Successful transformation needs a carefully balanced approach of appropriate change management combined with effective delivery, that considers both the technical and people aspects of change. As AI speeds up the pace of change, you and your teams need to be ready, willing and able to run with it.
Build your skills step by step
Like any valuable skill, you build change management capability gradually. Here are practical ways to grow your change management skills and know-how:
Read to lead
Read widely to keep up with the fast-moving world of change management and AI. Pick trusted sources, industry blogs, and key publications that speak to your interests. Block out 30 minutes each week to read – you’ll be amazed at how quickly you can build your knowledge. Start with topics that directly relate to your current challenges, then branch out to explore emerging trends.
I have always been intrigued by the power of effective teams. Here is an article from McKinsey
that I read recently about leveraging teams and taking a team-centric approach to change and transformation.
Listen and learn
Turn some of your daily commute, walk or exercise time into learning time with podcasts, audiobooks or Youtube videos. I say ‘some’ of that time, as I’m a firm believer in having ‘clear head time’ too, without any technology. About half the time my walk in the woods is without any technology. The other half, I enjoy listening to audiobooks or podcasts on a wide range of topics, usually focused on my personal development.
Podcasts can be such a rich source of inspiration and information, and when done well, very easy to listen to. I enjoyed listening to this recently – Mel Robbins talking to Jefferson Fisher about communicating with others.
I often say that successful change comes about through one conversation at a time. These conversations can often be challenging. There are lots of practical tips in this podcast for dealing with potentially tense situations and creating space for more fruitful conversations.
Connect with experts
Learn from others in your field. Industry events and conferences give you chances to network, share experiences, and learn from others. Check out our guide to 2025’s top change management events to plan your networking calendar. 2025 brings an impressive line-up of change management events across Europe and North America.
